Congratulations to Simon Meehan who was named BT Young Scientist and Technologist of the Year 2018 at the RDS on Friday 12th January.

His project was in the Biological and Ecological category and was an "Investigation into Antimicrobial effects of both  aerial and root plants of selected plants against Staphylococcus aures"
As Simon himself says "People are going deep into the Amazon rainforest looking for new antibiotics. But I’m a 15-year-old boy who found this down his own back garden. That has got to be amazing"
Simon investigated the anti-microbial effects of such humble plants as the bramble and the asparagus. All the students and staff and extended communiity are very proud of him and of all our Young Scientists.
This achievement was the culmination of two years of research motivated by a love of learning and the inspiration of his grandad, Eddie Lucey who was a herbalist.

Toscaireacht ón nGaelcholcáiste chuig an Bhruiséil

E-mail Print PDF

Chuaigh grúpa scoláirí ón nGaelcholáiste chuig Pairlimint na hEorpa le déanaí.
Fuair Seán Ó Tuathail agus Isaac Lee James cuireadh chuig an Bhruiséil agus bhí an múinteoir Joe Ó Donnchú ina dteannta. Thugadar cuntas ar imeachtaí an turais.

"Fuaireamar an deis cuairt a thabhairt ar Phairliamint na hEorpa le MEP Liadh Ní Riada. Bhuaileamar le daltaí agus múinteoirí ó Ghaelcholáistí eile fud fad na tíre agus thug sin an deis dúinn Gaeilge a labhairt an t-am ar fad. D'itheamar bricfeásta agus dinnéar le chéile i mbialanna sa Bhruiséil agus bhí an grúpa go léir ag úsáid na Gaeilge. Ócáid iontach a bhí ann! Chaitheamar lá gnóthach sa Pharliamint i lár na cathrach. D'éist an grúpa le dlíodóir teanga faoi na postanna éagsúla a bhíonn ag daoine áirithe ann.Las ár tsúile orainn agus an méid Gaeilge a bhí ag an mbean seo. Ansin, d'fhreastalaíomar ar thuras timpeall na parliaminte. Is áit ollmhór, gnóthach í! Tar éis an lón blásta a bhí againn bhialann, d'imir an grúpa cluiche. Bhí ar an mbeirt againn páirt a ghlacadh i ndíospóireacht agus thugamar óráid bunaithe ar Bhrexit. Taithí suimúil agus tairbheach a bhí inti. Táimid fíor-bhuíoch as an deis a bhfuaireamar chun dul go dtí an mBruiséil."
