Coláiste Choilm are Munster Senior Schools Golf Champions

E-mail Print PDF

Congratulations to the Coláiste Choilm senior golf team of Sean Geary,Jack Taylor, Zak Collins, Stephen Riordan and Keelan McCarthy who won the Munster Senior Schools Final lately. Thanks to their coach Mr. Kieran Styles and best of luck to them in the National Final in April 2019.

Colaiste Choilm from Ballincollig won their first Munster Pennant when they defeated De La Salle Waterford in the Munster final of the Irish Schools Senior Championship.  Played in great conditions in Castlemartyr, the final was a very competitive affair, with the match swinging towards De La Salle early on before Colaiste Choilm came back strong.  De La Salle won the first two matches, Rory Milne won on the 18th while Alex King won on the 17th. Zak Collins won on the 18th to put a point on the board for Colaiste Choilm, and Jack Taylor added a second with a 4&3 win.  It all came down to the last match, Muskerry’s Stephen Riordan was one up playing 17, and when he won that hole with a great birdie the match was over with the win going to the Cork college.  Both Colaiste Choilm and De La Salle had good wins in the morning semi-finals, Colaiste Choilm beat St Francis College Rochestown while De La Salle beat St Brendan’s Killarney.

Sir Bob Geldof gives an inspiring talk to a packed Cultúrlann

E-mail Print PDF

Coláiste Choilm was honoured with the occasion of a visit to our school by Sir Bob Geldof, on Friday 12th October. He gave a delightful talk on his love for the inspirational poetry of William Butler Yeats.
Ms. Padraigin O Donoghue, teacher and school librarian extended the invitation to  Mr. Geldof should he ever be passing and luckily he was speaking in Skibereen for a commemoration of An Gorta Mór.
Ms. O Donoghue organises a regular cultural Éigse event in the school library where the school community's love of literature, music and culture is celebrated. Mr. Geldof was presented with a cheque for money raised in the school in aid of famine relief.
Bob recited some of his favourite poems by Yeats and gave an insight into the context of those poems and the value of a wide education.

E-mail Print PDF

6th Year History students accompanied by teachers Mr. John Ryan and Ms. Nora Mai Granville traveled to Krakow, Poland on September 4th 2018. This has been the first time the History department has ventured on a foreign excursion. On the first day students took a walking tour of the old city of Krakow. Later, the UNESCO World Heritage Salt Mines in Wieliczka where they took in the breathtaking Church 1500m below ground. The second day was a sobering reminder of the atrocities of WWII with a visit to Auschwitz-Birkineau - the largest German concentration camp in the Third Reich. The following day, students explored Oskar Schindlers factory while taking some much needed time to shop. A trip that was hugely successful and a once in a lifetime experience for the students
