Hairspray the Musical

Hairspray : The Musical

The Transition Year of 2009/2010 are performing the West End hit Musical “Hairspray” this coming December. This fantastic show captures all the hip hop and vibe of the early sixties as well as addressing some of the social issues of its time. This years show is performed by an extremely strong cast of over 100 students who tell the story of “pleasantly plump” teenager Tracy Turnblad, her love of dancing, and her desire to be famous, her ambitions to appear on The Corny Collins Show and Edna, her mother who tries to protect Tracy from being laughed at due to her weight. Velma Von Tussle, the producer of The Corny Collins Show, rejects Tracy from the auditions because of her size. Tracy ends up in detention at school where she meets black dancer, Seaweed (the son of the host of Negro Day, Motormouth Maybelle), who teaches her several dance moves. She uses the dance moves to impress Corny and he gives her a place on the show. After a term in detention, prison, and gaining a spot in the Miss Teenage Hairspray competition Tracy Turnblad and the cast of the show manage to draw the audience into a fast and furious musical filled with songs and choreography that is guaranteed to have you tapping your feet and swinging your hips to the musical hits like “Good Morning Baltimore”, and “I Can Hear the Bells” The show runs from December 7 – 10th, tickets are available from the school Office.
