Colaiste Choilm claimed the Cork Colleges ‘C’ Ladies Junior football title by comprehensively defeating Youghal in the Youghal G.A.A. grounds on April 30th. The four goals they scored in the opening twenty minutes got the Ballincollig outfit off to the best possible start with centre forward Aoife McCarthy ripping the Youghal defence to pieces. She was ably supported by Niamh Foley, Oonagh O’Brien and Michelle McNally who all got on the score sheet in during the opening exchanges. It was not all one way traffic though and against a strong wing Youghal registered 1-3 in the opening half.  At half time the score read 4-4 to 1-3 but with a strong wing in the Youghal schools favour in the second half Colaiste Choilm were always going to half to work hard to maintain their advantage.

Youghal came thundering into the second half getting the first two points with their forward line looking more potent. However, their ploy of only leaving two in the inside forward line came undone too often with Colaiste Choilm captain Julianne Martin and corner backs Cliona Irish and Marie Nevin sweeping up a lot of loose ball. They were supported by player of the match Deirdre McAuliffe who was inspirational at centre back and tigerous wing backs Meabh McManaman  and Aisling O Keeffe. The key moment of the game came 10 minutes into the second half when Cork U14 Grace McDonald finished a superb move to the roof of the net to kill off the East Cork schools challenge. Credit too must be given to Colaiste Choilm’s youthful midfield pairing of Samantha Coomey and Meabh Flynn who covered every blade of grass in the field and also won a lot of the kickouts.

The game fizzled near the end with the Ballincollig school completely dominating. Substitutes Elaine Scally, Emer Roche, Sarah McCoy and Catriona Ni Cathasaigh contributed very positively when introduced throughout the second half showing the depth of talent at the schools disposal. After the game, Catriona MacManaman presented the cup to Colaiste Choilm captain Julianne Martin who thanked Youghal and the referee  for a sporting contest. Many of this team will also be involved in the senior final against Colaiste an Chraoibhin (Fermoy) which will be played in the coming weeks and trainers Donal Lyons and Elaine Cotter are hoping for a treble as the first years have already won the ‘B’ blitz recently. Details of this final will be relayed at a later stage and all support would be deeply appreciated.
