Congratulations to Simon Meehan who was named BT Young Scientist and Technologist of the Year 2018 at the RDS on Friday 12th January.
Thank you to his mentor Karina Lyne, his parents and all his familhy and friends who supported him in his endeavour.

His project was in the Biological and Ecological category and was an "Investigation into Antimicrobial effects of both  aerial and root plants of selected plants against Staphylococcus aures"
As Simon himself says "People are going deep into the Amazon rainforest looking for new antibiotics. But I’m a 15-year-old boy who found this down his own back garden. That has got to be amazing"
Simon investigated the anti-microbial effects of such humble plants as the bramble and the asparagus. All the students and staff and extended communiity are very proud of him and of all our Young Scientists.
This achievement was the culmination of two years of research motivated by a love of learning and the inspiration of his grandad, Eddie Lucey who was a herbalist.
